Key Considerations for Building a Hot Tub

If you really are going to build a hot tub yourself you will need to consider a few basic things:

  1. Do you have a water source? Sounds obvious, but if you plan to empty your hot tub after each use you will need a large regular water supply. A typical hot tub needs about 350 gallons of water.
  2. Do you have a suitable water vessel? Plastic containers can work well but be careful not to use chemical totes or old containers that used to contain toxic substances. These plastics tend to absorb chemicals and they can then leach into your hot tub water and body. Wooden hot tub kits are available, but be prepared for leaks since wood expands and contracts over time making leak-proofing very difficult.
  3. How will you heat the water? In line electric heaters are the most common but wood, gas, and even solar are possible. If you are trying to limit cost or electrical use it is possible to build a hot tub with a wood-burning stove based on the thermo-siphon principle: hot water naturally rises so positioning the water intake lower than the output creates natural water circulation. However, these types are pretty basic and may not be cheaper or easier to manage than a standard hot tub.

Building a hot tub could be a gratifying experience but it certainly would have challenges. We invite you to visit one of our 300+ dealerships worldwide to shop for a new or used hot tub that may be exactly what you are looking for.
